Perspective on Sin
(This is the first in a series of studies
that will explore the different aspects of Understanding
Ourselves and Understanding God. Each study is designed
to be easy to prepare and easy to teach. All the studies
compliment and build on each other. The open-ended questions
are designed to encourage discussion and participation
by everyone).
After you've done some icebreaking activities, announcements,
music (or whatever else you do to begin your meeting),
read these passages then ask these questions:
Read Psalms 14:2-3
2 The LORD looks down from heaven on the sons of
men to see if there are any who understand, any
who seek God.
3 All have turned aside, they have together become
corrupt; there is no one who does good, not even
one.
Read Psalms 53:1-3
53:1 ... The fool says in his heart, "There
is no God." They are corrupt, and their ways
are vile; there is no one who does good.
2 God looks down from heaven on the sons of men
to see if there are any who understand, any who
seek God.
3 Everyone has turned away, they have together
become corrupt; there is no one who does good, not
even one.
Say: Sin, we're all guilty.
Ask: How do you define sin in your
own words?
Ask: Why is sin in our lives so hard
to control sometimes? Is our struggle with sin temporary
or lifelong?
Ask: What is the greatest struggle
with sin that you personally see with college students
today? Why are those sins so tempting?
Step one is to know where we stand with God.
Share: Go around the room and have
volunteers share when, where, and how they made that
decision to trust Jesus as their Lord and Savior.
(Don't put anyone on the spot, see who will freely
share first and see how it goes from there. You
might start first. If someone does not want to share
this, does not know what to say or some other reason
- don't force them. After the Bible study meet with
them personally and ask them to share with you privately
how and when they trusted Christ if in fact they
have. If you're not sure, go over the green "Would
You Like to Know God Personally?" booklet.)
Say: "Next week we will look
at the issue of dealing with sin by first understanding
if God is really going to be by our side on this. Will
God leave us to struggle with this alone? Check it out
next week."
