Recruiting for Conferences

Probably the most important recruiting factor for any student to attend a life-changing conference is to go yourself. Of course, there are cases when a leader cannot go, but the overall participation of a movement at a conference is directly proportional to the participation of the student leaders.

Two things work together to maximize student attendance at a conference:

  • movement-wide momentum
  • individual help.

Movement-wide momentum - These are the things you do at movement functions to inform and motivate your students to consider going.

This would include announcements, skits, and conference testimonies. Movement context is crucial. People will consider going if they know they are part of a group.

Individual help - The purpose here is to help a student work through his/her issues concerning attending the conference.

  1. Give information about the conference.

  2. Explain the benefits of the conference to them. Be specific.
    1. Personal growth in their walk with God.
    2. Get to know other students in a deeper way.
    3. Fun.
    4. Vision building.

  3. Explain why you are going to the conference.

  4. Ask what obstacles might inhibit them from attending the conference. Encourage them to be honest. Common obstacles are fear, lack of motivation, money, parent's hesitations, work responsibilities, time conflicts. Discuss how these obstacles might be resolved.

  5. And of course, pray. God has overcome countless obstacles for thousands of students providing a way for them to attend a conference or retreat. Pray, also, for God to work in a new way
